The Summerhouse Project Part 2

OK so it’s getting near to D day (delivery day!!) and we needed to get the base shored up and in a good state.   We knew that the old shed stood on some large flags but we didn’t know how many and what state they were in, anyway it turned out that there was enough large (and VERY heavy) sandstone flags to form a good base, so really it was just a case of leveling and squaring up a big enough area for the new structure, (the new structure is slightly larger than the old shed).

After a couple of hours of measuring shuffling and concrete mixing (which I did!!) all lead by site foreman, my hubby, things are looking pretty good to go, the spaces in between the flags were full of dust like soil that hadn’t seen light or rain since goodness knows when, there were one or two signs that at some stage a mouse might have lived there, so we took the decision to fill these in with gravel, so that the area is still free draining but not rodent friendly (I wouldn’t bother me if a mouse took up residence as one lives under the water butt that is raised up on bricks at the side of the bug hotel, it was more the larger rodents I was concerned about!!), my talented man has even dug in a cable for electricity (Under the bucket!!) and cabling so that we can link the doors up to the house alarm!!.

I have also been potting stuff up, growing flowers etc, in anticipation of the new arrival, I have a rabbit salad bar/kitchen herb garden, all in troughs that are sat on top of what I call the bug hotel, we had loads of the tiles that you can see and they were in my way, so I piled some old bricks either side and made a wooden “table” top, the result was storage for the tiles and extra room for my herbs/lilly’s etc (win/win really).

Needless to say I am pleased with the results and getting more excited by the minute!!
